Preparing for the storm!
As a homeowner, the approach of hurricane season is always a little scary. How many hurricanes will form this year and how strong will they be? Will they hit your area? Thankfully, there is a lot you can do to be prepared. Here are 5 prep tips you can start right now.
Come up with your family’s evacuation plan.
Decide at what point your family will leave the area. Do you have friends or family a few hours away, or in another state if things are looking particularly bad? Make arrangements now that can be in place in short notice if something happens. Map out the route you will take if traffic is heavy and make a list of things you will take with you as you evacuate.
Stock up on supplies.
Do this before a storm is headed your way. The last thing you want is to be running around town only to find bottled water is sold out at every store. Make a list and include things like lighters, matches, candles, packaged and canned foods, water bottles, a can opener, first aid kits, flashlights, batteries, whistles, hygiene items, and other essentials.
Make preparations to board up your windows.
It’s a wise idea to have plywood and the necessary tools ready should you need to board your house. You can also have hurricane shutters or storm panels installed for protection that will save you time and energy and keep you from having to do it yourself.
Put together an entertainment kit.
Pack a box or bag full of fun items that will keep you and your loved ones occupied if power is out and cell phones have died. Books, decks of cards, board games, battery-operated radios, and other items will keep you entertained.
Review your insurance policies.
Take a few moments to speak with your insurance agent to make sure you understand your current homeowner’s coverage inside and out, and whether or not it covers wind and flood damage. Upgrade or add new policies as necessary to ensure that your coverage meets your needs and protects your home.
